LEARN SOUNDPAINTING

How to Study Soundpainting?

Soundpainting is, by its nature, an experiential tool, best learned (and performed) in practice between humans. You can find a list of Soundpainting teachers, and masterclasses given throughout the world.

The Basic Material: The Soundpainting Workbooks

Essential for any Soundpainting student are the workbooks by Walter Thompson. The explanations are clear, each sign is accompanied by photos, and each workbook comes with a DVD featuring examples. The books can be ordered via soundpainting.com or downloaded as PDFs for a fee. The workbook videos are available below.

•           Workbook 1 covers the basic signs for music, the simple signs that are most commonly used and that everyone should thoroughly master.

•           Workbook 2 deals with more complex signs for music. These signs require more practice for musicians and can only be used with those who have a solid grasp of the basics.

•           Workbook 3 includes the signs from Workbooks 1 and 2 as they apply to theater and dance.

•           Workbook 4 focuses on visual arts.

Lessons

Even with the workbooks and a lot of studying, you will eventually need some lessons. The language is very rich, and you'll need someone to give you tips and steer you clear of pitfalls. Many learning opportunities can be found around the world.
