BELGIUM (Ghent)

LEADER: Johan SABBE

DISCIPLINE: Music / Spoken Word

The Safety Last Soundpainting Ensemble was founded in 2022 by Belgian Soundpainter Johan Sabbe. Adventure and risk are at the heart of the ensemble. The Safety Last Soundpainting Ensemble is made up of musicians recognised in different fields of music (early music, contemporary classical music, pop, folk, jazz, live electronics ,…) and the choice of instruments is deliberately very un-orthodox (viola da gamba, bass flute, accordeons, piano, electronics, percussion…). Singer Loeke Van Houtteghem is an expert in slam poetry and provides every performance with live composed poetry. The ensemble never uses written compositions or texts. The aim is to create ephemeral compositions in which the performers avoid the beaten paths.

The ensemble grew out of the challenge of creating a live composed soundtrack to a movie: a combination of spontaneous live composition with the rigid structure of a movie. The ensemble eagerly accepts challenges like these.

The group seeks to establish cooperations with other ensembles that embrace the same philosophy.
